So much for the romantic walk!

At 11AM this morning, the bands were closed. Ed asked me if I wanted to go for a walk and then take a dive in the pool. Naively, I thought we were going for a romantic walk around the island. But next thing I know, Ed is treasure hunting for long bamboo poles! How naïve could I be!! The good thing for you guys searching for us on the air, is that we actually found a few 34-35 feet long poles out there. They seem to all be constructed the same way, with a square hole at the larger end, and fishing ropes attached to it. They must have some type of use for fishing, may be holding nets or something. In any case, we could get 40 feet by attaching 2 together. So, if you need 160m, don’t lose all your hopes yet! Ed will try to work 80m tonight before trying this major construction!
On another subject: I am sensitive to the “JA wall” issue. I am asking Ed when there is a chance for EU or NA to be open, and I have put the JA on standby a few times. So, let me know if you heard me while I was working JA. I’d love to know and to “serve” you better!
Talk to you on the air, hopefully!

George, K7LV: I spotted a DX posting about an hour old on Webacape. It was bright sun in Las VEgas, Nevada. It was about 15:17 GMT March 26, 2008. There was a slow fade in and out on your signal, with a period of 1 to 2 minutes. On the peaks, the signal was solid Q5. The signal did not move the eter much, but that is not unusual, as I have only a GAP vertical antenna close to a house and palm trees. On about the third try, working 3 up, from 7.006 mHz, you came back. What a thrill!

Using your license on your webpage for the coordinates, I found the Spratleys on Google earth. Another big thrill.

My wife came to the shack, and I showed her your web page--suggesting that maybe she should get a license, and we'll go on a DXpedition. The answer was "no way!" What a dissapointment for me--but I have known it for a long time anyway. You two are lucky to have the adventure and common interests.

I am amazed at what 100 watts and basic antennas can do from there, working into the bright sun here, on 40 meters.

I have not signed up to put posts on DXscape.com, but I am going to sign up so I can do the posts. The DX spotting nets are probably the secret to NA pileups, I suspect, especially for easy daytime contacts on 40 meters!

I will be reading the blogs every day, hoping that you have a good time. I will be looking for 20 and 15 meters (other freqs too), but with only a vertical, it is doubtful that I will be competitive. I might get lucky, and crack the pileup. Who knows? Best 73. Keep up the good work!
